Common questions
What is the difference between Base64 and Base64URL?
Base64URL swaps + and / for - and _ and usually drops the = padding, so the result is safe in URLs and file names. JWTs use Base64URL. When decoding, this tool accepts either.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Anyone can decode it. Base64 only makes binary data safe to send as text, for example in Kubernetes Secrets, email attachments and data URIs.
Why does my decoded text show as hex?
The decoded bytes are not valid UTF-8 text, which usually means the original was binary data such as an image, a key or compressed data.
Is my input sent anywhere?
No. Everything, including files, is processed in your browser.
