Common questions

What are the new regime tax slabs for FY 2026-27?

Up to ₹4 lakh: nil. ₹4 to 8 lakh: 5%. ₹8 to 12 lakh: 10%. ₹12 to 16 lakh: 15%. ₹16 to 20 lakh: 20%. ₹20 to 24 lakh: 25%. Above ₹24 lakh: 30%. Budget 2026 kept the FY 2025-26 slabs unchanged.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?

Yes, under the new regime. A rebate of up to ₹60,000 cancels the tax when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. Salaried people also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief means you never pay more tax than the income above ₹12 lakh.

What are the old regime slabs?

Up to ₹2.5 lakh: nil (₹3 lakh at age 60 to 79, ₹5 lakh at 80+). ₹2.5 to 5 lakh: 5%. ₹5 to 10 lakh: 20%. Above ₹10 lakh: 30%. Taxable income up to ₹5 lakh gets a rebate of up to ₹12,500. The standard deduction is ₹50,000.

When is the old regime better?

Usually only when you claim large deductions, such as full 80C, health insurance, HRA on high rent and home loan interest together. The comparison above shows the break-even for your numbers.

Is this my exact tax?

It is an estimate for regular salary and other income. It does not handle capital gains taxed at special rates, agricultural income or arrears relief. Rules now sit in the Income-tax Act, 2025, where some section numbers changed; check with a tax professional for complex cases.
