Common questions
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Both use the same profit but divide by different things. Margin is profit ÷ selling price; markup is profit ÷ cost. Buying at ₹80 and selling at ₹100 is a 20% margin but a 25% markup.
How do I price for a 30% margin?
Divide the cost by (1 − 0.30). A ₹700 cost needs a ₹1,000 price for a 30% margin. Adding 30% to the cost (₹910) gives only a 23% margin, a common pricing mistake.
Should GST be part of the margin?
No. GST you collect is passed on to the government, so work out margin on the price before GST. Enter a GST rate to see the price your customer pays.
