chmod 755 (rwxr-xr-x)

The owner can read, write and run, and everyone else can read and run. The default for directories, scripts and programs.

chmod 755 my-file
# same thing in symbolic form:
chmod u=rwx,g=rx,o=rx my-file

In ls -l output, a file with this mode shows as -rwxr-xr-x and a directory as drwxr-xr-x.
